“According to the Revenu Quebec website, the following is an eligible medical expense for the 2008 tax year:
- the premium paid under the Québec prescription drug insurance plan for 2008, provided December 31, 2008, is included in the reference period (12 consecutive months) used to determine the amount of medical expenses
My reference period for tax year 2008 is January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2008. Therefore I am including the premium paid for 2008 in my calculation of Quebec medical expenses for tax year 2008.
But according to the Revenue Canada website (for tax year 2008), "You can claim medical expenses paid in any 12-month period ending in 2008 and not claimed in 2007".
Now is the tricky part... does Revenue Canada imply that the premium paid for 2008 (line 447 of 2008 Quebec return) is considered paid when I filed my Quebec taxes for tax year 2008? Since I filed my 2008 Quebec taxes in April 2009, does that mean that the premium for 2008 was paid in April 2009? Therefore, should the premium for 2008 be claimed in the 2009 federal return (and not in the 2008 tax year as is the case for the Quebec return)?
