~irish_undaground: I talked to an intelligent and polite person. The problem was that although my cellphone account had been set to ring for thirty seconds before the answering machine picked up, it was actually ringing for less time. The tech support person reported that it was in fact set for ** seconds, but she double-checked by calling my cellphone. When she double-checked, my cellphone still was not ringing long enough. She reset my account preferences and called my cellphone again. The cellphone then rang for the correct length of time, thirty seconds. As an extra, she advised me that AT&T Wireless would be short-staffed over Christmas, and she texted me a link to the website for tech support. By the way, I was connected to a human after only two menu steps: I listened to the menu and hit the proper response buttons.
